Renting The Right Amount of Space

Categories: Storage Tips

Just what is the right amount of space to rent? You can use a size guide like the one we have on our website and this can be very helpful in determining what size storage unit you should rent. And here are some additional ideas to think about.

Often times we see tenants who will rent just enough to cram everything in without leaving room for anything else. Some tenants are better than others at packing their unit to the brim. It can be quite comical to watch. Maximizing the space may seem practical but it can come back to haunt you later.

When you load your self storage unit to the top on day one you have left yourself without any room to grow down the road. As is often the case, you are going to need more storage space over time. It almost always happens. The last thing you will want to do is run out of room and have to rent a bigger storage unit. Unless of course, unloading and reloading a storage unit sounds like a good time to you. One option would be to leave everything in the current storage unit and rent a new one. This, however, would not be economical. The cost of two smaller storage units is more than the cost of one larger storage unit. And if you were to rent a second storage unit the changes are that it wouldn’t be very full.  It is much to rent a larger storage unit in the first place, giving you room to grow.

One other thing to think about is that it can be difficult to judge how much stuff you have and how much storage space you will need. When estimating how much space you need you should fudge it a little bit before you settle on the size. One good way to do it is to estimate the size you will need and then rent a unit that is the next largest size.

And last but not least keep in mind the importance of keeping your storage unit organized. Having an aisle or aisles in between your belongings will help you maintain access so you can easily get to all of your things. If you stack all of your belongings tight it could take a lot of time and lead to a lot of frustration when you are trying to find something. And in addition to maintaining access we recommend clearly labeling your boxes with the label on the aisle side and if you want to be really organized you can stack your boxes in alphabetical order.

We hope these tips will help you choose the right size storage unit. At Nova Storage we have a wide variety of storage unit sizes and if you need any additional help choosing the right size please contact our staff.
